Strawberry History

Strawberry, as its name suggests, does not have Iranian roots and is not native to Iran. This fruit, which is known as strawberry in Latin, was first cultivated as a garden in the late 18th century in Brittany, France. Of course, this fruit was abundantly found wild in the forests of Europe and had medicinal uses, but as a garden crop, it gradually found its way to the gardens of the French people. Gradually, after the spread of strawberry cultivation in Europe, the cultivation of this medicinal plant was taken to other continents, and little by little, with the discovery of different species and different methods of planting in different countries, the production of fruits in the current form of strawberries began. But strawberries in Iran have a lifespan of less than 100 years; It was in 1317 that it was brought to Iran from France by Atabak Azam and planted in Falahat garden. In 1345, Sheikh Osman Naqshbandi brought some strawberry plants from Turkey to the country and planted them in his garden in Durud, Kurdistan. Over time, the cultivation of this delicious and fragrant fruit tree was developed and with the research done on it, it was cultivated in different parts of the country, especially in greenhouses. But even now, Kurdistan is considered one of the largest producers of strawberries in the country, which also produces one of the best varieties in terms of taste and smell.
